Tasting through Kenyan lots is always a privilege as there are so many exciting flavors and coffees to discover. Even the lots that are on the lower scoring spectrum. Kenya just produces amazing coffee when attention to detail is done right. This coffee is no exception, and a project of one of the best in the country. Dormans, who is a company known for producing, and or helping produce some of the most amazing coffees in the country, helped make this one possible for the Kiru Farmers Cooperative Society. Juicy, bright, and bursting with sugary complexities that will surely make you appreciate what coffee can be.
This coffee was de-pulped, fermented with light agitation in clean water in cement tanks for 12-24 hours, and then dried on raised beds.
Kamagogo Coffee Factory was established in 1970s and is currently part of the Kiru Farmers Cooperative Society, with a membership of around 1,000 smallholder farmers. After delivery, cherry is hand sorted, depulped, fermented overnight, and laid out on raised beds to dry where it is hand sorted for defects again. Kamagogo assists local farmers with pre-financing and access to inputs and seminars on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP). The washing station also features demonstration plots to help train local farmers on best practices for growing coffee.
