ICHUGA AA / KENYA
Green Apple, Juicy, Strawberry, Orange Cream
Varietal: SL-28, SL-34
Elevation: 1750-1950 masl
One of the First fresh Crop Kenyas of the season on our offering list. This coffee is exactly what we look for in a Kenya. No sweet tomato or vegetal notes, just nice clean juicy red fruits with up front acidity and intense bright sweetness. Remember those commercials for Smuckers Jam where the cute little kids smacked their lips and puckered their mouths after a taste of that sweet jam? Well we do, and this coffee is kinda like that. Below is a bit more about the process and mill of this coffee.
Ichuga is a wetmill located in Nyeri county. Ichuga is one of 4 wetmills - or 'factories' - operated by Kiama farmers' co-operative society. The co-op has 3,549 members, of which 690 deliver cherries to Ichuga for processing. The farmers occupy land on the eastern slopes of Mount Kenya and western slopes of the Abedare range, at altitudes of 1,200 - 1,800masl. Varietals cultivated include SL28, SL34, Ruiru 11 and Batian. This coffee has employed the traditional washed process in Kenya where it is washed in clean water not once but twice before it is out to dry. This process ensures the cleanest tasting cup you can hope for. The fermentation tanks at Ichuga are mostly ceramic, but some coffee is subject to cement tanks as well. Those coffees are then blended after drying, and then taken to the dry mill.
